New online art gallery 23PINE is the brainchild of former Swedish fashion creatives Jörgen Ringstrand, Stefan Engström and Karin Holmer. The idea was born on the 23rd floor in their joint home on Pine Street in New York, which is also the story behind its name. The team has also recruited Lars Nittve a renowned art critic and former director at the Modern Museum in Stockholm, Tate Modern in London, Louisiana in Copenhagen as well as M+ in Hong Kong.
In opposite to mass produced prints, 23PINE has a focus on affordable high quality prints, including Fine Paper Prints sustainably printed on Swedish paper using traditional printing techniques.
”They are printed using a beautiful combination of old traditions and new technology, enabling us to offer the public images with a ”handmade” tactility and feel, but with more pigment saturation and brilliance than ever before,” Nittve says.
TNE You have a background from large cultural institutions such as Moderna Museet, Tate Modern and Louisiana. What potential do you see in an online gallery?
LN A mantra for my work with both Tate Modern, Moderna Museet and the Louisiana museum has been "Excellence and Access” – without compromising the intentions of the artists, making their work accessible to large audiences. Ultimately they are democratic projects - and the same goes to 100 percent for 23Pine. The best of photography made accessible to basically everyone - both in terms of price and distribution - without compromising the quality even a bit!

TNE Where do you see the future of consuming art?
LN My rule number one is and has always been: you can never really predict how art will develop, where it goes. Whatever you guess - you can be certain that art will develop in a different way. But one aspect, with new technologies and systems for distribution coming in - is, I believe, further democratisation. And that art, more than ever before, finds its way into your home and private sphere.
TNE What kind of photography are you looking for to be represented?
LN One of the great things with 23Pine is that it is not bound by genres - it is a platform for all great photography. Previously the photography scene has been extremely compartmentalised - you buy some things in galleries and other things through other channels - or can’t even buy them. What makes me the most enthusiastic here, is that we can give great photographers working in specific niches - it may for example be garden- art- and fashion photography - or even skiing photography - an equal platform. Suddenly you can actually buy, and have on your walls, great photographs by for example Mattias Fredriksson, one of the true masters of ski photography!
