Fifty years ago there were more than 50 glassworks in the region Småland, aptly labelled the “Swedish Kingdom of Crystal”. The rich heritage stems back to the 18th century and created a thriving industry beyond the Swedish boarders. Today there are only a few of the old glassworks left, but the industry is seeing a revival of a new generation of glass designers combining old traditions with new techniques and exciting forms. Creating a dramatic, yet subtle backdrop inspired by 19th century still life imagery, stylist Sophia Bratt and photographer Kristofer Johnsson pay hommage to the long Swedish tradition in a still-life exclusively produced for The New Era.
...Do we still needed independent platforms? What role does a printed magazine fill in todays fast paced world? Has the growing reliance on social media as a marketing tool sparked a backlash? The exhibition Printed Matters, curated by The New Era Magazine, is a celebration of the printed magazine and the dedication it takes to make it come alive. It’s also a comment on the importance of the independent platform investing time and effort to publish work by established and new talent to make it available for a wider audience.
...During the pandemic, hungry for cultural activities and visual sensations, we invited celebrated fashion designer and textile artist Diana Orving to stage a sculptural installation in an empty museum exclusively for us. It was a day of quiet magic, watching her large scale textile art pieces slowly come to life as a beautiful but temporary installation where movement and choreography played a central role. The temporary nature of the installation – only up for a day while we captured it on film and camera – also added to the poetic experience.
...Swedish wood artisan Daniel Wester uses carving as therapy, creating beautiful wooden sculptures with a fragile sensibility. ...New online art gallery 23PINE is the brainchild of former Swedish fashion creatives Jörgen Ringstrand, Stefan Engström and Karin Holmer. The idea was born on the 23rd floor in their joint home on Pine Street in New York, which is also the story behind its name.
...Stockholm artist Anton Alvarez is endlessly exploring the depth of his innovative ideas – and the relationship between human interaction and the machine. Since our last interview at his studio, we take the opportunity to speak with him about his latest upcoming major exhibition, Roman Toothpaste MXXI, at art and design museum Vandalorum, in the south of Sweden. This time, Alvarez will be on site for the duration of the exhibition, so the space will become an immersive experience for the audience to directly see the whole process from start to finish, and the artist to engage and create a dialogue with the audience, lifting the barrier between artist and viewer.
...The positive impact of art and inspiring young creatives is needed now more than ever – especially as most cultural events have been cancelled, and institutions have had to close within the last year. Fortunately, with the return of Stockholm Art Week, we are starting to see things gradually lifting again, with Swedish Crown Princess Victoria digitally opening the week in alignment with UN’s global day for innovation and creativity. Throughout the week there have been a number of events and exhibitions both open for public viewing, as well as digitally – giving those outside of Stockholm a chance to also get a glimpse into the vibrant Nordic art scene. We have picked some of our top highlights during the week.
