Launching this week, the Finnish furniture company Vaarnii aims to introduce “a new Finnish vernacular” using local materials and local makers – from specialised factories to individual craftsmen – which are all carefully introduced alongside the furniture pieces online. Their first range of furniture is completely made from uncultivated Scots Pine grown in the middle, north and north-east of the country, which is slow growing and thus more dense. Naturally occurring fractures are kept visible and filled with natural resin, staying true to Vaarniis values of honest and unconventional furniture making.

The Swedish/British furniture company Massproductions founded by Magnus Elebäck and Chris Martin has just launched a new webbshop with best-selling products as well as limited edition pieces. In connection with the launch, Massproduction unveils The Transparency Project, an initiative to investigate its environmental imprint.

Norwegian furniture company Vestre has launched a series of urban outdoor furniture designed by Note Design Studio. The collection Plinth which consists of outdoor bench and table, is made with the Vestre’s strong sustainable philosophy in mind.

British designer Faye Toogood is about to launch the studio’s first dedicated collection of homeware designs, aptly named Toogood Homeware. With over two years in the making, it will be available for sale in May, and follows the recent launch of the Fudge chair under the studio label. The new range is split between two capsules; Dough, which includes mugs, jugs, bowls and a platter, and Plough, two geometric throws. Highlighting the common ground of kneading in both baking and pottery, the ceramic pieces are hand shaped in the Toogood studio before being cast in earthenware and produced in Portugal.

Note Design Studio has continued their collaboration with Swedish carpet brand Ogeborg, this year focusing on their showroom rather than their fair stand. With an installation that lasts longer than a temporary stand, the overhaul is called The workshop and is a celebration of calm colours.

One of Sweden’s leading glass and ceramic designers, Ingegerd Råman, is returning to her roots by releasing a new series for Orrefors where she once realised her dream of designing cut glass.

Even if Stockholm design week was a small version of its former self, it did bring some joy to the design industry with several great initiatives. While some brands opted for digital launches, others staged exhibitions and opened their showrooms by appointment.

Besides launching brand new pieces, some of Scandinavia’s biggest furniture companies are opening up their archives this year. The pandemic has made many of them rethink and adapt their offers.

Besides launching new products – the table Savoa by Finnish designer Sakari Hartikainen and the Pinot seating collection by graduate designer Mika Lindblad – Swedese is rediscovering their old designs this year.
